Oilfield Fluid
Loss Prevention

One
challenge faced by the oil industry is maintaining the structural integrity of the well while crude
oil is being removed. This is done by lining the well with a compound that essentially prevents the
well from caving in on itself. This ‘cement’ must endure a wide range of temperatures and pressures
and must be both environmentally and economically viable. The Celanese Premiol line of products hasbeen
proven perfect for this application.
Celanese
Introduces Premiol Fluid Loss Control Additives for Oilfield Cementing Applications
New technology initiative to offer new levels of temperature performance, environmental
friendliness and cost control in off-shore, mid-range and deep well applications
The
emulsions and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) business of Celanese has announced a new initiative to develop
high performing chemistry for oilfield operations aimed at meeting current challenges for improved performance
and economics. Based on intensive R&D, Celanese’s new Premiol™ line of performance chemicals will
target a range of applications initially starting in the areas of cementing and drilling. The first
offerings in the Premiol line include three fluid loss control additives for off-shore, deep well and
mid-range well cementing applications. Celanese is supporting the new product lines with in-house cementing
and drilling fluid labs and experienced personnel dedicated to oilfield customers and optimal performance
of Premiol products in the field. According to Mike George, Global Marketing
Manager, Innovation Segment, the Premiol initiative is part of Celanese’s on-going effort to create
value for customers from its strong technology position across a range of chemistries. “The introduction
of these first Premiol lines of oilfield performance products represents a new beginning in the oilfield
industry for Celanese. Building on a thorough analysis of market trends and
needs, we are engaging in an intensive R&D effort to develop new products and to tailor solutions
that will resolve issues in productivity, performance, cost control, environmental compliance, safety
and more,” George said. “These first three products have been evaluated by oilfield service companies
and by independent laboratories. It is clear that they will create real value in the oilfield applications
they serve,” George emphasized. Three new fluid loss control
lines Three new technology pushes from Celanese in the area of fluid loss control
for cementing operations are represented by three distinctive product lines. These include: Premiol
DWC high temperature performance fluid loss control additives for deep well cementing; Premiol OSC high
performing, environmentally friendly fluid loss control additives for off-shore cementing; and Premiol
MRC, a line of versatile, cost-effective fluid loss control additives for mid-range well cementing applications.
Each of these lines begins with a single product, with additional products to follow in the coming months.
Premiol DWC-50: High performance, “all temperature” technology
Premiol DWC-50 is a powder-form fluid loss control additive for deep well applications
that delivers high temperature performance (up to 150ºC) at cost levels below traditional high molecular
weight polymers. At the same time, this advanced additive demonstrates excellent, cost-effective performance
at low temperatures (50ºC to 60ºC). With a single product that functions across a wide range of conditions,
the oilfield service industry can consolidate inventory of fluid loss control products. Premiol
OSC-10: A highly concentrated, environmentally sound alternative Premiol OSC-10
is a proprietary water-based, fluid loss control additive designed for offshore cementing or onshore
applications where liquid delivery is desired. This product delivers performance equivalent to the best
of traditional low temperature, mineral oil-based fluid loss control agents. The aqueous nature of Premiol
OSC-10 offers a better environmental profile than typical mineral oil-based products. The defining feature
of this product is its high concentration that allows for economical delivery and cost efficiency when
compared with competing technologies. Premiol MRC-33: Predictable
performance with excellent economics Premiol MRC-33 is a powder-form fluid loss
control additive for mid-range temperatures in oilfield cement applications. At temperatures between
75ºC and 120ºC, this product provides the excellent fluid loss and preferred, low surface rheology without
settling. These benefits provide the oilfield industry with a cost effective alternative to current
polymer technologies. Celanese in the oilfield Celanese
technology is being considered for a broad range of applications in the oilfield industry, with a current
focus on cementing and drilling. In the future, Celanese will support oilfield customers across a spectrum
of downhole applications, with target areas including acidizing, stimulation, workover, water management,
and fracturing. The R&D effort is supported by in-house cementing and
drilling fluid labs and experienced personnel dedicated to oilfield customers and their applications.
The primary mission of this group is the development of laboratory and field data to ensure optimum
performance and cost advantages are made available with leading-edge technology.
