At Celanese, good product stewardship is good business.
Risk assessment using the Product Stewardship Risk Management (PSRM) process
Celanese is committed to participating in collaborative efforts to provide the public with critical information about the effects of our products on health and on the environment as a whole. Our commitment to Product Stewardship is a key element of our contribution to the Responsible Care program within the chemical industry at large.
Our dedication to product stewardship is reflected in our Product Stewardship Risk Management (PSRM) process, which incorporates risk assessment techniques to ensure that Celanese products and processes which involve research, production, storage, transportation, handling, usage or disposal of chemicals will not present any unreasonable risk to employees, customers, contractors, consumers or others.
The PSRM process assesses EHS-related risks for the following:
During the PSRM Process, the Product Steward works with a cross-functional team of members who occupy various critical roles within the organization to ensure that the company is in compliance with all applicable regulations and appropriate health and safety standards for manufacturing, handling and end use. Third-party expertise is sought on an as-needed basis. Depending on the product under review, multiple regulatory bodies may serve as the intended audience. The proposed changes are reviewed by the team, and the decision to proceed with any given project is made using an internal approval matrix. This provision escalates decision-making for higher-risk projects or complex risk mitigation plans to more senior levels within the organization. Final decisions are then documented, and archives are maintained in support of the product for a periold of its life cycle plus 30 years. The end goal of this process is to provide the most reasoned assurance that our products do not present any unmanaged risks in production, storage, transportation, handling, end use or disposal to any of our employees, customers, contractors, consumers, others or to the environment as a whole.
Celanese implements management systems that incorporate appropriate scientific and risk evaluation to promote health, safety and environmental protection as an integral part of the design, manufacture, marketing, distribution, use, recycling and disposal of our products.
Our company also participates in industry-specific shared testing programs for its products. Examples of these include the compulsory Screening Information Data Set program run by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), as well as a number of voluntary programs, such as the High Production Volume Challenge Program and the Children's Chemical Evaluation Program that is maintained by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Celanese is a member of numerous industry-wide panels and consortia which are involved in Global Regulatory testing initiatives. Sharing testing efforts with other global manufacturers ensures that testing is not being unnecessarily duplicated in different regions of the world.
